Give back to
Nac
The BIG Event is an organization centered around community service. This organization gives students many avenues to serve the Nacogdoches community year-round.
The Day-of The BIG Event
Our BIGGEST service opportunity is the BIG day itself. Traditionally, on one Saturday during the spring semester, we gather thousands of student volunteers to venture out into the community and to complete hundreds of service projects at residents’ homes. This could include raking leaves, painting walls, planting a garden, and many other things! Students are able to register to volunteer individually or with a group of friends! The BIG Event is the largest day of community service in Nacogdoches County.
The BIG Event Staff Members help organize this service project year-round (there is a lot of work to be done leading up to this single day!).
Adopt-A-Resident
Another community service opportunity we have for staff members is to complete hands-on projects through our Adopt-a-Resident program. This monthly program allows staff members of The BIG Event the chance to interact and serve selected residents year-round.
Recently, we decided to give other organizations on the SFA campus the chance to “adopt” their own residents. This allows a great opportunity to connect with the local community on a monthly basis, rather than only on one day in the spring.
“Service in a Bag” Socially Distanced Service
Due to CDC guidelines in response to the recent COVID-19 outbreak, our team has had to get creative when thinking of ways to both continue giving back to Nac and to keep students and community members safe. One of the ways we thought would satisfy both of these needs is called The Little Event with “Service in a Bag” projects. The BIG Event will provide SFA students the opportunity to give back to their home-away-from-home. Those interested will receive a bag with one of three different projects including homemade dog toys that will be donated to the Nacogdoches Animal Shelter, heartfelt cards to be donated to local nursing homes during this unprecedented time, and paper bags decorated with positive messages for students in local schools.
We will continue to think of safe and creative ways to unite the SFA campus and the Nacogdoches community throughout the pandemic.
